Aboriginal Engagement Officer

HiTalent Recruitment is working exclusively with a respected not-for-profit organisation in Central Coast to recruit an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Worker. This organisation delivers community-based support for people affected by alcohol and other drugs (AOD), and is committed to embedding culturally safe and responsive practices across its services.

This role plays a key part in improving cultural outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants at a residential transformation centre. You will lead and contribute to cultural capability initiatives, engage with Elders and community organisations, and support culturally appropriate service delivery and staff development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide cultural support and guidance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants accessing AOD services.

  • Build strong referral pathways with Indigenous Elders and Aboriginal-controlled organisations.

  • Lead discussions and strategies to embed cultural safety across service delivery.

  • Support and co-facilitate Yarning and Learning Circles.

  • Provide input to case management teams to ensure cultural needs are reflected in participant support plans.

  • Conduct regular site reviews to ensure a culturally safe environment.

  • Strengthen internal cultural competency and contribute to state-wide cultural capability initiatives.

  • Stay up to date with best practices, research, and policy affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (a requirement under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977)

  • Qualifications and/or experience in community services, health, or a related field.

  • Strong understanding of the cultural, historical, and social determinants impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

  • Ability to engage effectively with Elders, community leaders, and Indigenous organisations.

  • Knowledge of trauma-informed, person-centred approaches and cultural frameworks.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence service practice and support cultural safety.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

  • A valid NSW Driver’s Licence and willingness to travel when needed.

  • National Police Check and Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain).
