HiTalent Recruitment is partnering with an established mental health organisation to recruit a Peer Worker based in Alice Springs.

This is a meaningful opportunity to use your own lived experience to support adults experiencing mental health challenges, distress or crisis, while helping them connect with the right services, supports and community networks.

TheService  provides free, immediate and short to medium-term mental health support to adults over 18, with a strong focus on lived experience, cultural safety, trauma-informed care and recovery-oriented practice.

About the Role

As a Peer Worker, you will draw on your own lived experience of distress, trauma and/or substance use, together with your recovery and healing journey, to support people experiencing similar challenges.

You will provide consumer-led emotional, social and service support while working alongside a multidisciplinary team.

The role involves supporting people experiencing crisis, helping them identify their strengths and goals, developing safety together, connecting them with appropriate services and supporting them to advocate for themselves.

You will also contribute your lived experience perspective to team discussions and continuous service improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one peer support to consumers
  • Facilitate peer-led groups and connect consumers with peer networks
  • Purposefully use your lived experience to build trust, connection and mutuality
  • Support consumers to recognise their strengths and identify what is meaningful to them
  • Promote hope, resilience, autonomy and self-advocacy
  • Support consumers experiencing distress and crisis
  • Utilise emotional regulation and de-escalation techniques where required
  • Co-create safety with consumers and colleagues while maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • Connect consumers with mental health, community and other support services
  • Facilitate warm referrals and service navigation
  • Provide culturally appropriate support to people from diverse backgrounds
  • Provide outreach support while maintaining safety
  • Support consumers to self-advocate for government benefits and services
  • Welcome new guests and gather relevant intake information
  • Work collaboratively with consumers and community partner organisations
  • Contribute lived experience insights to continuous service improvement
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation
  • Participate in supervision, professional development and team reflection
  • Provide appropriate handover to colleagues across shifts

What We're Looking For

  • Personal lived experience of distress, trauma and/or substance use, with a focus on healing and recovery
  • Ability to purposefully use your lived experience to connect with and support others
  • Strong emotional resilience and the ability to support people experiencing distress or crisis
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and adapt communication to diverse needs
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
  • Strong self-reflection and openness to feedback
  • Good written communication and computer literacy
  • A valid Working with Children Check

Desirable

  • Intentional Peer Support core training
  • Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work
  • Hearing Voices training
  • Group facilitation experience
  • Previous experience in a designated Lived Experience role

Who Would Suit This Role?

You may currently be working as a Peer Worker, Lived Experience Worker, Mental Health Peer Worker, Peer Support Worker, Recovery Worker or Community Support Worker, or have experience in another role where you have used your lived experience to support others.

You will have your own lived experience of mental health distress, trauma and/or substance use and be able to use the learnings from your recovery journey purposefully and safely in your work with others.

You will understand the importance of connection, mutuality, cultural safety, recovery and helping people identify what is meaningful to them.
